Digital Video Recorders or DVRs record video and sometimes audio from multiple security cameras. DVR options include number of channels (inputs for cameras, typically 4,8,9 or 16), recording rate (frames per second or images per second, measured by camera and for the DVR in total) and storage (or disk capacity (measured in gigabytes). DVRs can be networkable for internet viewing, have motion detection and come with DVDs or CDs for saving recordings. We also have time lapse VCRs and multiplexers. Choices include American Dynamics, Arm Electronics, Bosch, Dedicated Micros, Everfocus, GE, Nuvico, Pelco, Samsung, Sanyo, Speco and Toshiba.

Good power supplies are essential and surge protection is a necessary piece of any high quality system. Some cameras come with power supplies, others do not. Professional power supply boxes for multiple cameras enable structured wiring. Lightening strikes and electrical surges are unpredictable disruptions and the currents from these surges can be carried over any metal conductor like electrical wiring and plumbing. Many indoor installations do not have sure protection but most likely an indoor CCTV system will cross wiring, plumbing or structural metal, including where the camera is mounted. Power supplies are available from most camera manufacturers and surge protectors are from leading companies like Altronix and Ditek
